In this Q&A, Ina shares how she discovered EvoDevo, the big questions driving their research and her passion for mentoring the next generation of scientists.

* How did you first become interested in EvoDevo?
With a background in biochemistry and molecular biology, I was a postdoc at Caltech studying gene regulation in developing sea urchins. Driven by curiosity, I took a course in Paleontology and Evolution, where I discovered the EvoDevo perspective.

* What motivated you to become a PI?
I became a PI to pursue my own scientific aspirations and satisfy my curiosity about how biology works.

* Which big scientific question excites you most?
My lab wants to understand how the information encoded in animal genomes gives rise to the remarkable diversity of animal cell types and body plans.

* Which project had the biggest impact on your career?
Our work on the sea urchin photoreceptor system revealed an unusual non-ocular visual system, challenged the idea that sea urchins are “brainless,” and sparked international collaborations.

* What is most rewarding about mentoring PhD students?
Seeing students become excited about experimental research and helping them develop a passion for scientific thinking is incredibly rewarding.

* How do you maintain your curiosity after many years?
Working closely with PhD students continually exposes me to fresh ideas and perspectives that keep my curiosity alive.

* How has your participation in MSCA ITNs/DNs impacted your career?
Collaboration has always been a mantra of my career. Since joining MSCA actions in 2002, it has become even more central, fostering lasting international collaborations and interdisciplinary research
