Founded in 1872 by the German zoologist Anton Dohrn, the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn is one of Europe's oldest and most prestigious marine research institutes. Located on the Gulf of Naples, it was created with a visionary goal: to provide scientists from around the world with everything they needed to study marine life, from laboratory space and equipment to access to specimens, scientific literature, and local ecological knowledge.

To ensure both financial sustainability and scientific independence, Dohrn introduced an innovative model in which universities, governments, and research institutions could rent "research tables" for their scientists. Researchers were free to pursue their own ideas and projects, fostering a truly international and collaborative scientific environment.

A key part of Dohrn's vision was the public aquarium, opened in 1874 and still operating today. Revenue from visitors helped support the research facilities, creating a unique link between science and society.

More than 150 years later, SZN remains a world-leading center for marine biology, continuing its tradition of innovation, discovery, and international collaboration.ย

We are proud to have SZN as part of the ZooCELL network! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ”ฌ
